WE Bowman's 'The Ascent Of Rum Doodle' is laugh out loud funny on almost every page, parodying the naivety and imperialist zeal of such men whilst applauding their 'can do' attitude. Finally, we have WE Bowman's 'The Ascent of the Rum Doodle', an utterly bonkers parody of the adventure novel, described as doing for mountaineering what 'Three Men In A Boat' did for the Thames. Another book worth reading is “The ascent of Rum Doodle” – I read this book when I was in Greenland in 2004 but there are two copies kicking round camp so I hope to get to reread soon. Mountain literature would be incomplete without "The Ascent of Rum Doodle". Messner's climb is particularly pertinent because he .. Probably Green, favorite book is a tough one, right now it's probably The Ascent of Rum Doodle by W.E. Have you ever read “The Ascent of Rum Doodle”? The Ascent of Rum Doodle is a fantastic book I've recently read about a spoof mountaineering expedition. Hamish's Mountain Walk by Hamish Brown; Blizzard by Jasper Rees; The Ascent of Rum Doodle by W.E. Two other classics worth mentioning are Maurice Herzog's Annapurna , possibly the most famous mountaineering book ever (about the first ascent of an 8000m peak and subsequent horrific retreat), and Reinhold Messner's The Crystal Horizon (first solo Everest climb, without oxygen). Actually downloaded on it, so I was stuck with labouring through another few pages of “The Ascent of Rum Doodle”, which purports to be a humorous swipe at the climbing literature of the 1950s, but isn't actually that funny. I'd been lent a copy of 'The Ascent of Rum Doodle', his father's witty, fictional account of the ascent of a 40,000 and 1/2 foot high Himalyan peak by a well-intentioned, if bumbling, English expedition. A bumbling group of British mountaineers mounts an assault on Rum Doodle, a slightly higher neighbor of Everest, in Bowman's parody novel, which was published in 1956 and became a classic within the climbing community.
